Walton to Steel Rigg (16 miles) – The Great divide
(7 set out, were joined by1 and 5 reached Steel Rigg ….)
Another dry day with wind on our backs.
Once again Richard made sure we were on the road (path) bright and early but it was obvious early on that reaching Steel Rigg was going to be a big challenge for some.
Today we discovered that:
- Geoff’s right knee is in worse shape than he thought and needs medical attention so he only made it 7 miles to Gilsland.
- David was more than happy to hang back and accompany Geoff and miss out on reaching Steel Rigg – what a servant.
- Neil battled on with serious blisters as far as Gilsland (7 miles). Well done Neil.
- John got so tired that he was in bed by 9pm (For those of you who know John will realise how incredible this is). ‘Tired but content’ is how he described himself.
- DC continued to devour those hills as if they were not there.
- Richard bullied lead us to achieve our goals – At YHA before 5pm.
- Paul has an amazing capacity to just keep on going

Ave! Per ardua!!! Sorry not to be able to wave to you as you traversed the Stanwix, River Eden area (Stanegate was a Roman fort now a primary school is on that site not far from us.) 12 yrs ago I walked the wall, from N’cle end, to say farewell to beloved place – much missed not least the people!! Got terrible blisters the third day after walking 16 miles to Corbridge so have much sympathy. Local Byker-born lady asked me how I would get to Carlisle My reply:”I will be walking the wall” Her response was still: ” But how will you get there?” She had imagined the wall was all on the Geordie side!! Have just seen the thermometer rising!! Will drop in our denarius asap (Quote-The value at its introduction was 10 asses, giving the denarius its name which translates to “containing ten”. In about 141 BC it was re-tariffed at 16 asses…”) so must be really woth something now!!!!)Vale O nobilissimi
